How To Remove Single Pane Glass
Once in a while you want to do things yourself and it is possible that you could remove a single pane of glass without calling us at Thousand Oaks Glass. Step one is to use a putty knife or chisel to flake off the old window glazing. Once and while it can be too hard to remove the glaze with a putty knife and when that occurs one can soften the glaze with a torch or heat gun. Unless you have used these tools before, you must be very careful not to char or burn the window sash or doorframe. When successfully uncovering the old glazing points, pull them out with a pair of pliers. With the old glazing and glazing points removed, you should be able to lift out the broken glass fragments from the broken window.
Step two: After removing the glass and glazing, it is time to use a scraper or chisel to gently clean off all large chunks of glazing on both sides of the L-shaped channel from the window.
Step three: You want to use a piece of sandpaper to sand the window channel smooth, down to the bare wood. Afterwards you will want to measure the window opening for a new piece of glass, and remember to subtract 1/8 inch from all sides.
Step four: Visit Westlake Glass if you are nearby or go to someone else to cut a piece of glass to your exact measured dimensions or it is possible to cut your own piece of glass, but we do not recommend this. When cutting your own glass, you must clean the glass thoroughly, lay it on a smooth, flat surface, and then using a cutting square, line up your cut and make one pass with a glasscutter – or bring it to us and we’ll cut the glass.
If you are not nearby, you will then line up the scored line on the edge of a workbench – and making sure that you have your gloves on – hold down the glass, snap off the cut piece by applying pressure and then repeat the scoring and snapping until the glass is cut to the right size – but, like we said, let a professional like Agoura Hills Glass do the job for you.
After cutting the glass bring it back to the window frame and using a primer or sealer, you coat the bare wood. You must allow it to dry before proceeding with the job. When the wood sealer is dry, use your putty knife to place a thin layer (1/16") of glazing compound in the L-shaped window channel.
Then gently press the new glass into position, making sure the glass is contacting the glazing compound on all of its edges. Place the glazing points flat on the window glass surface. Using your putty knife, be sure to push the glazing points horizontally into the wood frame, making sure to hold the glass in position. Be careful not to bear down on the glazing points or you may break the glass. For smaller windows you will want to put 2 glazing points on each side. And for your larger windows, you’ll want to position the glazing points 10" apart.
Be sure to apply a bead of glazing compound along each edge of the window and to use your finger or a small putty knife to create an even, sloped surface that runs to the front of the window sash.
Once you have the glazing compound skimmed over, you will now be ready to paint the window. You’ll want to use a good sash brush that will allow you to get a small bead on paint on the glass; around 1/16 inch is good. This small bead of paint will help seal the window against the outside elements of wind, rain and sprinklers.
